Do you want to straighten your misaligned teeth, but just won’t do it because you hate the way traditional braces draw attention to your mouth? You know straighter teeth will make you feel better about your appearance, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have to go through two years of embarrassment wearing traditional braces in order to get your new smile. At Simply Smiles - Family & Implant Dentistry of Ashburn, we understand your concerns about your appearance while wearing braces. That’s why we offer a clear aligner system for straightening teeth.
With Clear aligners, there are no metal bands or brackets to call attention to your teeth and no wires to try to brush around. Custom-fitted, clear plastic trays are used to gently shift your teeth into the correct position. The trays can be removed, making it much more convenient when eating or when cleaning your teeth.
Efforts to straighten teeth with some sort of wire wrapping date back over 2000 years. This eventually developed into what we think of today as traditional metal braces. This system works well, but has some disadvantages. The metal brackets and wires can sometimes be uncomfortable and cause irritation to the inside of your mouth. And traditional braces don’t look very appealing. In fact, many people avoid having their teeth straightened because they don’t want “a mouthful of metal.”
The Clear aligner trays are made from smooth plastic which feels much more comfortable on the inside of your mouth than the wires and brackets used in traditional braces. This means no irritation of your mouth lining.
Clear aligners are made from a clear plastic which makes them virtually unnoticeable. Most people won’t even know you are wearing them.
In most cases, clear aligners can straighten your teeth in about 9 to 15 months, where traditional braces can take 24 months. Of course, the exact length of time to straighten teeth will vary for each patient, but clear aligners has proven to be notably faster than traditional braces.
You remove your Clear aligners when eating, then put them back in place when you’re done. You don’t need to be concerned about food getting caught in the wires, causing you embarrassment, unlike traditional braces. You can eat all the foods you enjoy without concern, because you remove the aligners when eating. With traditional braces, you need to avoid certain foods, especially foods that are hard or sticky.
You can easily maintain your oral hygiene routine with Clear aligners. Simply remove them, brush and floss, then put them back on. Traditional braces require much more time for proper brushing and flossing, making it more likely that you will rush through it and not do a thorough job, or even avoid
When a special occasion comes up, like graduation pictures or wedding photos, you don’t want to hide your smile, but you also don’t want to be embarrassed by a mouthful of brackets and wires. Clear aligners can be removed, so you can take them out for the special occasion, then put them back on afterwards. Simple, convenient, and you won’t feel embarrassed.
Typically, you see your dentist about every six weeks so he can check the progress of your clear aligner treatment. With traditional braces, the dentist often needs to see you about every four weeks to tighten the wires and replace rubber bands. Clear aligners takes up less of your valuable time.
We all want to look our best, and having a great smile is a big part of that. But in addition to looking good, there are other benefits to having evenly aligned teeth which have a positive effect on your health:
Straight teeth are easier to floss. If your teeth are crowded, it’s harder to floss them properly, leading to possible tooth decay and gum disease from bacteria buildup.
When your teeth are crowded, sometimes one or more lower teeth can protrude and rub against your upper teeth, causing excessive wear on the tooth enamel and creating further oral issues.
Misaligned teeth can put undue pressures and stresses on the muscles and joints of your jaw, leading to neck pain or headaches. Straightening your teeth can alleviate these symptoms.
Crooked teeth are harder to clean properly which can lead to bacteria buildup and gum disease. Left untreated, this can worsen until you have an active infection in your gums. Any infection in the body is risky, but studies show that oral infections can lead to other health complications, including heart disease and stroke.
Your self-esteem is important to your overall well-being. Having straight teeth can give you the confidence to smile more often and feel happier.
We take x-rays, photos and impressions of your teeth which the Clear Aligners lab uses to custom-make a series of aligner trays which fit snugly over your teeth. Each tray is designed to shift your teeth just a little bit. You wear each set of aligner trays for about two weeks, then switch to the next set. About every six weeks, you come to our office so we can check how the treatment is progressing. Your teeth become straighter with each succeeding set of aligner trays until they are beautifully aligned and you have the smile you wanted.
