What is a Sinus Lift?

The sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure that aims to increase bone density in the upper jaw. This procedure is typically performed in the premolar and molar areas when the upper jaw has insufficient bone height to support a dental implant.

Why is it Needed?

The maxillary cavities are filled with air and located above the upper teeth. The bone that supports the teeth in the upper jaw can shrink over time, particularly when the molars are lost. Due to this bone loss, the sinus cavity can expand, reducing the amount of available bone for implant placement.

In these cases, a sinus lift is required to make room for dental implants. By lifting the sinus membrane and inserting bone grafts into the newly created space, bone height and volume can be restored. This procedure is designed to create a stable base for dental implants and ensure the long-term stability and success of the restoration.

Different Types of Sinus Lift Procedures

Two main types of sinus lifts are available:

  • Lateral Windows Technique:

This traditional technique involves making an incision in the gum to expose the jawbone. A small window is then created in the bone to gain access to the sinus membrane, which is gently lifted or pushed up. The space under the lifted membrane is then filled with a bone graft. Once the incision is closed, the healing process can begin.

  • Osteotome (Internal-Sinus-Lift):

This is a less invasive technique that can be used if there is not enough bone height to place implants. Instead of creating a lateral opening, a small incision is made into the jawbone, and specialized instruments are used to gently lift the sinus floor. The space under the sinus floor is filled with bone grafts, which promotes new bone growth. This technique allows for faster healing and less discomfort.

Candidates for Sinus Lift

Candidates for a sinus lift include:

  • You may have experienced bone loss on the upper jaw (posterior maxilla).
  • You need dental implants, but your bone density or height is insufficient to support them.
  • You are in good health overall, and you maintain excellent oral hygiene.
