When your dentist fills a cavity or repairs your broken tooth, it’s a restorative dentistry procedure. It’s called restorative dentistry because the repair restores your teeth to a healthy condition. Restorative procedures include the following procedures:
Dr. Aman Sabharwal and his dedicated team at Simply Smiles - Family & Implant Dentistry are Ashburn’s premier restorative dentistry team.
Since the 1800s, the standard material for filling a cavity was a mixture of metals called a mercury amalgam. This worked well to fill the cavity, but wasn’t very attractive. Modern advances in dentistry have given us a new filling material made from ceramic and plastic. This new filling works as well as the old metal fillings, but can be made to match the color of your teeth, leaving your smile looking natural.
We use dental onlays and inlays to make repairs in teeth that don’t have the extensive damage which requires a crown. The advantage of using an onlay or an inlay instead of a crown is that the tooth does not need to be reduced in size to make room for a crown to fit over it. The onlays and inlays are crafted to replace the missing tooth material exactly, restoring your tooth’s original shape without the need to remove healthy tooth enamel.
When you have one or more missing teeth, a dental bridge can be fabricated to replace the missing teeth and restore your smile. A dental bridge is fixed in place, allowing you to eat normally.
Dental bridges are the workable solution for people who need an economical way of restoring their smile.
Of all the dental procedures that are done, the idea of a root canal seems to cause patients the most concern. What you need to know about a root canal is this—your current tooth pain is caused by an infection that needs to be treated. The infection can become dangerous, even life-threatening, if not treated. You have two options--get the tooth pulled or get a root canal. The root canal saves your tooth by removing the infected tooth material. The actual procedure is not painful because your tooth and gums are numbed, just like when you get a cavity filled. The pain people associate with a root canal is due to inflammation and swelling from the infection the root canal will remedy.
