With so much information emerging about how periodontal health is connected with overall health, it’s never been more important to take good care of your oral health with regular visits every six months to your dentist. For most patients a six-month schedule is sufficient, however for patients who struggle with gum disease may need additional cleaning appointments throughout the year to help keep their condition under control.

We know that the bacteria responsible for causing periodontal (gum) disease can also contribute to issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and vice versa. Maintaining optimum oral health means that you’re also maintaining your overall health.

WHAT HAPPENS AT MY ROUTINE VISIT?

There are a few important things that take place at your six-month cleaning and check-up. First, our highly skilled hygienists clean your teeth and remove the excess plaque buildup that contributes to many dental conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease. They’ll also spend time educating you about your oral health so you can make improvements to your home care routine.

Next, Dr. Sabharwal will screen you for issues such as oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, and cavities. By detecting these issues early on, we can give you the opportunity to treat your issues successfully with the least invasive treatment. For example, a cavity detected early on can typically be treated with a dental filling rather than letting it progress and become more decayed, which would require a dental crown.
